The gardens and locations introduced here were selected by the staff of Waplus Kyoto, a kimono rental shop in Kyoto. So, wherever you are introducing a beautiful location photo There is no doubt that you will be able to take pictures!

5 popular garden locations in Kyoto

We will introduce five gardens and locations near Waplus Kyoto that are often used in Kyoto location photos.

Please take a look, as it will be helpful when searching for locations to take location photos in Kyoto, or when consulting with the staff at a kimono rental store about location photos.

Here, we will tell you about the following five gardens and locations.

Yasaka Shrine
Maruyama Park
Yasaka Koshindo
Kiyomizu temple
Kodaiji Temple

Yasaka Shrine, 1 minute walk from the store

The first place we will introduce is Yasaka Shrine, which is famous for the Gion Festival!

Yasaka Shrine is said to have blessings for marriage, beauty, and warding off evil spirits, and is affectionately known as “Gion-san” in Kyoto.

This Yasaka Shrine is characterized by its beautiful vermilion building, and location photos are often taken with that vermilion in the background. There are also buildings unique to the shrine, such as the main hall and dance hall, so it is recommended to take photos in front of them.

Specifically, there are the following location shooting spots.

West Tower Gate
Main shrine
・West Tower Gate
When you head towards Yasaka Shrine from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station, the first thing that catches your eye is the West Tower Gate. It is a beautiful vermilion-painted gate, and many students on school trips and tourists take pictures in front of it. Yasaka Shrine is one of Kyoto’s most representative shrines, so by taking photos here you will be able to capture the atmosphere of Kyoto in your photos. However, since it is a popular spot, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning if possible.
・Main shrine
The main shrine, which is painted vermilion like the West Tower Gate, is also a popular location for photo shoots. The main shrine, which has been designated as a national treasure, is built in a unique architectural style called Gion-zukuri. If you are planning to visit Yasaka Shrine, you should definitely visit the main shrine at least once. You can capture scenery that looks great in location photos, such as scenes of people praying. Yasaka Shrine is also famous for changing its colors with the four seasons. Beautiful scenery greets you every season, such as cherry blossoms and blue maple leaves in spring, and autumn leaves in autumn. If you want to take location photos in Kyoto, we recommend that you include Yasaka Shrine as one of your options!

Maruyama Park, 5 minutes walk from the store

The second park we will introduce is Maruyama Park, which is a vast park with a pond strolling garden* located behind Yasaka Shrine.
(*Pond stroll garden: A garden designed around a large pond.It is designed so that you can enjoy the garden from various angles by walking around the garden.)

Here at Maruyama Park, the Gion Weeping Cherry Blossoms are planted in the center of the park, and it is also known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto. There are also many maples and maples planted here, so you can enjoy the red leaves in autumn.

Maruyama Park is a popular tourist spot that shows different natural beauty depending on the season, but since it is a large park, it is difficult to get crowded with people, making it relatively easy to take location photos.

After taking a location photo at Yasaka Shrine, we recommend taking a location photo at Maruyama Park as well!

Yasaka Koshindo, 5 minutes walk from the store

Yasaka Koshindo is a tourist attraction in Kyoto that is also famous as an Instagrammable spot.

When you visit Yasaka Koshindo, the first thing that catches your eye are the colorful talismans called Kukurizaru. This amulet contains the wish to “suppress one desire in order to make one wish come true.”

By taking pictures on location with this colorful Kukuri Monkey in the background, you can take pictures with cute colors and a somewhat unusual feeling!

Kodaiji, 4 minutes walk from the store

The fourth place we recommend is Kodaiji. Kodaiji Temple, which is within walking distance from Yasaka Shrine, has many spots that are great for photos, such as the main gate, tea room, garden, hall, and the wooden walkway leading to it.

In particular, the front garden of the Hojo and the Horai-style garden are famous as gardens that each have a Kyoto flavor.

The front garden of the Hojo is a garden filled with white sand, and a weeping cherry tree has been planted there as if watching over the garden. In spring, these weeping cherry blossoms are in full bloom, creating a fantastic contrast between the white sand and pale pink cherry blossoms.

In addition, the Horai style garden is a famous garden of Kodaiji Temple. This is a garden made with a pond and historic wooden buildings (tea room, hall, etc.) that fits the word “garden”. If you like the historic atmosphere of Kyoto and the townscape of townhouses, you may want to take location photos here. You will be able to take photos that will make you feel as if you have traveled back in time to the days of the aristocrats.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, 12 minutes walk from the store

The last temple I would like to introduce is Kiyomizu Temple, which you often see on TV! Even if you have never been to Kyoto, there are probably many people who have seen the “Shimizu no Butai.”

In addition to the Kiyomizu stage, Kiyomizu-dera Temple actually has many location shooting spots, such as the three-storied pagoda and the Niomon gate.

・Shimizu Stage
The stage in Kiyomizu, where the Kanji of the Year is announced every year, is a well-known tourist attraction in Kyoto. The vast stage that juts out from the cliff is a spectacular sight to behold, and its majesty will captivate your eyes.
・Niomon
When you visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, the first thing you will pass through is Niomon. A pair of Kongorikishi statues stand on either side of the large vermillion-painted Niomon Gate.
・Three-storied pagoda
Thirty-one pagodas with a height of 31 meters can be seen from far away, making them one of the symbols of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The three-storied pagoda is also painted in bright vermilion, with dragons and Buddhist paintings painted on the ceiling and pillars.

As you can see, Kiyomizu-dera Temple has many photo spots, and as it is a major tourist attraction, it is crowded with many people on Saturdays, Sundays, and during the day. When shooting on location here, it will be relatively smooth if you consider the day of the week and time of day.
